Reducing waste is an easy way to save money and reduce your carbon footprint. Purchase products made of recycled materials or take a moment to keep
recyclables out of the trash. One of the easiest ways to reduce waste is to consistently recycle paper, bottles and cans, electronic waste (e-waste)
batteries, and toner cartridges.
Our recycling efforts save the County of Ventura more than $200,000 per year!
Green Your Paper Products
Is your company or organization still purchasing virgin paper (paper with no recycled content) for the office? Take a moment to work with your procurement folks to phase out the use of virgin paper and adopt a minimum standard of 30 percent post-consumer waste (PCW) recycled content for all paper products - if you can, stretch and purchase only 100 percent recycled content. Choosing recycled paper has a multitude of environmental benefits, including a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in the protection of biodiversity and native forests. If you implement double-sided copying and printing, typically you can save enough to offset the additional cost of 100 percent recycled paper.
Kick the Bottled Water Habit
Is your company walking the talk when it comes to using bottled water? This is an easy place to make a tangible, visible difference. Work with management to eliminate bottled water at the office, events, and meetings by using filtered water machines and reusable containers. The cost savings will add up.
Batteries are considered hazardous waste; they release toxic chemicals that seep into our soil and should not be thrown in the garbage. Sign your business up for a battery-recycling program and educate your employees to recycle all batteries. Two programs offer low-cost, convenient recycling for single-use (alkaline) batteries: The Big Green Box and the iRecycle Kit from Battery Solutions. Contact one of these programs to order a recycling container. The fee includes prepaid shipping. When the container is full, simply seal and ship it back.
Reduce Paper Waste
Cut the paper, not the trees. When you reduce the amount of paper you use, together we save trees and money. Collectively, small actions, such as setting printer defaults to double-sided printing, copying double sided, distributing publications electronically, and making processes paperless whenever possible, will make a difference.
Promote Reuse at the Office
One person's trash is another person's treasure. Freecycle@Work is a program that promotes the concept of reusing products at work. Freecycle@Work creates an easy way for employees to exchange equipment, supplies, and other items for free, saving money and reducing waste.
Recycle Electronic Waste
Electronic waste (e-waste) includes old computers, electronic equipment, mobile phones, television sets, and refrigerators. As it breaks down, e-waste emits toxic compounds that are hazardous to the environment and must be disposed of properly. The County of Ventura offers an E-Waste Collection Program that accepts electronics for recycling from businesses.
